The Computational Memory Lab is currently seeking applications for the following positions:
Research Project Manager
The computational memory lab at the University of Pennsylvania seeks to recruit a talented scientific project manager to help lead a multi-center team in carrying out research on the use of brain stimulation to study brain networks underlying cognitive functions and to help create neuromodulation therapies that will someday help restore memory function in patients who have suffered brain injuries. This position requires a unique combination of leadership / teaming skills and technical expertise in the fields of neuroscience and/or bioengineering.
The project manager will supervise a staff of full-time research specialists and software developers, and assist them in carrying out this federally-funded BRAIN initiative project. The successful applicant will enjoy leading a dedicated and hardworking team whose hub is at the University of Pennsylvania but that includes researchers at leading institutions around the world. Applicants should possess an exceptional academic background, including at least some coursework in computer science/engineering/ mathematics, and should also have experience in managing projects that involved supervisory experience. This position is contingent upon funding.
- A Master's degree in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, biophysics, or related field
- 3-5 years of research experience, ideally in a setting of high-volume data collection and quantitative analysis
- Experience with clinical and/or research electrophysiology systems (scalp EEG, intracranial EEG, human single unit recordings)
- Strong neuroscience/neuroanatomy background knowledge
- Experience with scientific/statistical computing techniques and languages (MATLAB, R, Python/SciPy, or similar)
- Strong communication skills, including written/spoken presentations (including technical details), training, formal e-mail correspondence, etc.

The Computational Memory Lab at the University of Pennsylvania seeks to recruit a research specialist to assist with a multicenter project aimed at identifying patterns of brain activity that predict when memory will succeed or fail, and using these patterns to guide closed-loop stimulation protocols aimed at boosting memory in patients with brain injury or neurological disease. The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, clinicians, data scientists, and engineers to carry out research under several federally funded grants. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills, a sound foundation of technical skills and a strong desire to further build those skills during their tenure in the lab, and a passion for research aimed at understanding the neural basis of human memory. This is an ideal position for someone interested in pursuing future graduate training in cognitive/systems/computational neuroscience or bioengineering, and provides an excellent opportunity to work with clinical researchers, neurologists, and neurosurgeons at top medical research centers across the country. The position requires familiarity with Python, MATLAB, or similar programming languages, and comfort working in a Unix environment. Exceptional candidates will have experience in data analysis and programming and a strong record of academic achievement. A 2-year commitment is expected. Position is contingent on continued funding. This work will include the rapid and flexible development of new experiments in human memory, as well as critical improvements to existing programs and libraries. The candidate is expected to coordinate with a team of cognitive scientists, neuroscientists, and engineers on multiple projects involving brain stimulation to boost human cognitive abilities, online experiments of human memory, and computational cluster analyses of EEG data from human participants. Active coordination is expected with the systems development team to design systems, develop plans and testing procedures, and prepare releases. Other responsibilities may include resolving systems administration issues, file server and web system issues, and computer cluster issues. Additional projects may include analysis of collected data and simulations of human memory processes in computer models of memory.
The position is planned as temporarily remote, with an expectation of on-site presence at the University of Pennsylvania upon resumption of on-site activities for this position category.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, with 1 year of experience.
- Experience in C++ and Python programming.
- Demonstrated experience completing significant technical projects or working on large code bases.
- Familiarity with Linux.
- Familiarity with version control and deployment tools, such as git, conda, pip, travis, or similar.
